This program provides information about how to assess for intimate partner violence, explores safety-related ethical issues that arise when counseling clients in IPV relationships, and explains the use of safety plans as a tool for promoting the safety of clients in IPV relationships. Course Objective:
Upon completing this program, participants should be able to:
  • Assess for intimate partner violence;
  • Discuss safety and ethical issues related to counseling clients in IPV relationships; and
  • Develop safety plans with clients in IPV relationships.

Kress, PhD, PCC-S, is Associate Professor, Community Counseling Clinic Director / Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program Coordinator, and Jake J. Protivnak, PhD, PCC-S, LSC, is Assistant Professor / Coordinator, Counseling Program. Safety planning material has been compiled and edited by Jill Miller, JD, who graduated from the University of Washington School of Law. She is a member of the Washington State Bar Association and is currently vice president in charge of operations and business development for At Health, Inc.
